Frequently Asked Questions

What is a resident agent in Kansas?

A resident agent is an individual or business entity designated to receive legal documents, service of process, and official state correspondence on behalf of your LLC, corporation, or other business entity. Kansas law generally expects every registered business to maintain a resident agent with a physical address in the state.

Why do I need a resident agent?

The Kansas Secretary of State requires a resident agent so there's a reliable point of contact for legal notices, tax documents, and compliance correspondence. If your business is sued or the state needs to contact you, they send documents to your resident agent. Without one, your entity may fall out of good standing.

Who can serve as a resident agent in Kansas?

Individuals over 18 with a physical Kansas address can serve as resident agents. Business entities authorized to operate in Kansas can also serve. Kansas is one of the few states where the entity itself can serve as its own registered agent under K.S.A. § 17-7666 for LLCs and § 17-6202 for corporations.

What documents will I receive through my resident agent?

You'll receive service of process, state compliance notices, tax correspondence, biennial report reminders, and official mail from the Kansas Secretary of State. We scan each document the same day it arrives and upload it to your secure portal.

Can I be my own resident agent?

Yes, Kansas allows self-appointment. However, you'll need a physical Kansas address (no PO boxes), and your address will appear on public state records. You'll also need to be available during normal business hours to receive documents. Many business owners prefer a professional service for privacy and reliability.

How do I change my resident agent in Kansas?

File a resident agent change form with the Kansas Secretary of State and pay the $20 filing fee. The fee is $30 online or $35 by paper for for-profit entities, and $20 for nonprofits. Once the state processes your form, your new agent becomes the official point of contact.

What are Kansas's biennial report requirements?

Kansas switched from annual to biennial reporting in January 2024. Most entities file every two years by April 15 if they operate on a calendar year. The filing fee is $50 online or $55 by mail. The biennial report updates your entity's contact information, officers, and agent details with the state.

How much does the biennial report cost?

The Kansas Secretary of State charges $50 for online filing and $55 by mail. This is separate from our resident agent service fee. We send reminders before your deadline so you don't miss the filing window.

Who is the Kansas Secretary of State?

The Kansas Secretary of State oversees business entity registrations, elections, and public records. Their office manages LLC and corporation filings, resident agent records, and biennial reports. You can find more information at sos.ks.gov.

Why does your service cost $99 when others charge more?

We keep pricing simple and consistent. Many services charge between $125 and $436 per year, or they start with a low rate and increase it at renewal. We charge $99 annually with no setup fees, no document fees, and no price increases.

What's included in the $99 annual fee?

Everything: a physical Kansas registered office address, same-day document scanning and forwarding, compliance reminders, online portal access, and privacy protection. No hidden fees or add-ons.

How quickly do you forward documents?

We scan and upload documents to your portal the same day they arrive. You'll receive an email notification with the scanned copy attached. If you request physical forwarding, we send the original by mail.

What happens when non-legal mail arrives at your Kansas office?

We want to set the right expectations: our Kansas resident agent service handles legal and compliance mail only. We receive service of process, lawsuits, subpoenas, Secretary of State correspondence, tax notices, and annual report reminders.

We are not a virtual office, PO box replacement, or general mail service. Packages are not accepted. Google Maps verification postcards, Amazon verification letters, and other third-party verification mailings are also outside our scope.

If a stray piece of general mail arrives at your resident agent address, we accommodate up to 3 such items per year.

Looking for full mail handling? We offer a virtual mail add-on as a separate service for Kansas businesses. Get in touch with our team.

How do I sign up?

Visit our enrollment page, provide your business details, and submit payment. We'll confirm your service within one business day and send you login credentials for your document portal. If you're changing agents, we'll guide you through filing the change form with the state.

Can I use your address for my business operations?

No. Our address is for registered agent service only. You cannot use it as a mailing address, business location, or operational headquarters. It exists solely to receive legal documents and state correspondence on your behalf.

What happens if I miss my biennial report deadline?

The state may impose late fees or move your entity to inactive status. Kansas typically sends notices before the deadline, but it's your responsibility to file on time. We send compliance reminders to help you stay on track.

Do you offer refunds if I'm not satisfied?

We aim to provide reliable service and will work with you to address any concerns. Contact us at support@ksregisteredagent.org if you have issues. Our pricing is annual, so refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis.
