Kansas Registered Agent Requirements
A flat $99 buys one year of resident agent service in Kansas — the registered office, same-day scanning of court papers, and reminders before state deadlines.
Every business entity registered in Kansas must maintain what the statutes call a resident agent, the role known everywhere else as a registered agent. The requirements live in two short statutes: K.S.A. 17-7925 covers the agent and K.S.A. 17-7924 covers the registered office. This page explains both, who qualifies, and the address rules that catch people out.
For $99 per year, we provide a reliable Kansas address, same-day document scanning, and compliance support to keep your business in good standing.
What Does a Registered Agent Do?
Your registered agent serves as the official point of contact between your business and the Kansas Secretary of State. They receive:
- Service of process if your business is sued
- Official notices from state agencies
- Tax correspondence and compliance reminders
- Biennial report notifications
- Legal documents requiring a formal response
The agent accepts these documents during normal business hours and gets a scanned copy into your hands promptly. This ensures you don't miss important deadlines or legal notices.
Who Can Serve Under K.S.A. 17-7925
Kansas gives every covered entity four choices for its agent, and the statute's first option is the unusual one, "the covered entity itself":
- The entity itself
- An individual resident of Kansas
- A domestic corporation, limited partnership, LLP, LLC, or business trust
- A foreign corporation, limited partnership, LLP, LLC, or business trust authorized to transact business in Kansas
One caution if you research this yourself: some older articles still cite K.S.A. 17-7666 as the resident agent statute. That section was repealed in 2015. The current citations are K.S.A. 17-7925 for the agent and K.S.A. 17-7924 for the registered office.
The Address Rule: A Real Kansas Office, No PO Boxes
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order HereThe registered office must be a Kansas address where the agent is regularly present. Kansas treats the agent's business office as identical with the registered office, meaning someone actually needs to be there to accept service of process. A PO box does not qualify; the Secretary of State's own forms rule it out. In practice, that means availability during normal business hours, typically weekdays from 9am to 5pm.
Can a Kansas Business Be Its Own Registered Agent?
Yes, and explicitly so. Most states let an owner or an officer act as the agent, but Kansas goes a step further: K.S.A. 17-7925 lists the covered entity itself as an eligible agent. Kansas is one of the few states that spells this out.
Before you take the do-it-yourself route, weigh what it means in practice:
- Your address appears on public state records and stays there
- The address must be a physical Kansas street address, not a PO box
- Someone must be present during business hours to receive documents
- Anyone searching the state database can find the address
Many business owners prefer a professional service to keep a home address private and ensure reliable document handling.
